The rocky mountains are our land, as Greece does not have huge fertile plains. It is the mountains in particular where the klephts and armatoloi had their hideouts. It is there where battles with great valor took place and where freedom always prevailed.

It is these free mountains where - according to the song - the History of our land is dancing through figures who served freedom. They are enjoying their freedom and dancing with the music of different musical instruments: the σουραύλι (souravli - type of flute), the ζουρνάς (zournas/zurna - wind instrument) and the ταμπουράς (tambouras - string instrument). First, Nikephoros, maybe Nikephoros Phokas, the Byzantine emperor who freed Crete from the Arabs and strengthened the Byzantine Empire. Then Basil Digenes Akritas, who defended the acritic borders from the Arabs and whom it is said that only Death managed to beat. The son of empress Anna Komnene, who ruled in Greece with compassion. And from the more recent history, Nikitaras the Tourkofagos (“Turk-eater”), who loved our homeland with his whole heart.

This homeland is small, “μια φλούδα γης” - “just a peel of land”, but it is ours. With God’s blessing and its people’s struggles it was saved from the jackal (“τσακάλι”) and the bear (“αρκούδα”), which symbolize the devious and powerful enemies. This struggle of the Greeks from darkness to freedom is a celebration (“πανηγύρι”) that lasts for years in every corner of Greece.

“Κριτής κι αφέντης είναι ο Θεός” - “God is the judge and master”. The Greeks have always looked to their faith in God, and it is this faith that directs their actions. This proves that “δραγουμάνος” (dragoman) of God, namely interpreter of God’s will, are the people.

It is every Greek of our centuries-long history that struggles to keep this small land free with God’s help and guidance.
