Imprisoned as he is, he prays on his knees to the Theotokos to give him the strength to not succumb. Every day, delicious meat meals with no bread arrive at the stable, to make him eat and break the fast. But in vain. Ioannis passes out, but stays adamant.

On Sunday, 13 December 1803, about 60 Souliotisses (women from Souli) jumped off the cliff together with their children, so as not to surrender to the Turks. “They held each other's hands and started dancing a dance whose steps were an act of exceptional heroism... After every round they did, one of them would jump off the cliff…” The woman of Souli, free and virtuous in her entire life, prefers death to dishonour and slavery. Better dead and free and virtuous on the cliffs of Zalongo than alive and dishonoured and enslaved!
