The pain

of Makrygiannis

The pain of Makrygiannis

“When they mess with my country and my religion, I will speak, I will act and they can do as they like… This is my country and it was not set free with fairytales, it was freed with blood and sacrifices. And I love nothing more than my homeland. If someone should come and tell me that Greece will move forward, I am willing to let him take out both my eyes. For if I am blind, but my country prospers, it shall feed me, if my country is in a bad state, even if I had ten eyes, I would be blind. For I shall live in this country, I have no intention to go anywhere else.”

The Hero

DIONYSIOS SOLOMOS

The Hero

with the pen

There are battles that are fought not with the sword, but with the pen. With the ladle that struggles to feed the hungry. With the scalpel, with the plow, with the bucket of - the scarce - water. With sophisticated tools, but also with bare hands. With eyes that insist on looking at the Truth. With the voice, that gets hoarse and bleeds from fighting for justice.

Sacrifice

for freedom

Sacrifice for freedom

Not only was the sacrifice of the Neomartyrs important from religious aspect, but also from a national aspect for the oppressed christians. With their sacrifice, they stood up against the Turkish conqueror and saved the Greek civilization, because all Greeks knew really well that if they betrayed their faith it would be like they betrayed their origin. We read that for anyone who became a muslim, it was the same as becoming a Turk, he ceased being a Greek. For them, denial of the faith was the same as denial of Greece and death for the faith signified an offer to the battle for freedom. Those heroes of faith became fighters of freedom as well.

Πατρίδα ηρώων - "Homeland of heroes"

Lyrics (GR)

The fighters, in order to find strength for the continuation of the Struggle, were turning to the grace and protection of the Theotokos. The Dormition of the Theotokos in Hydra, the Monastery of Velanidia, of Voulkano, of Dimiova, of Mega Spileo, of Agia Lavra, of Varnakova, of Prousiotissa, of Tatarna, and other monasteries dedicated to the Theotokos had become revolutionary hubs and hideouts for the fighters.

When the legendary “Geros tou Morea” Kolokotronis was marching towards the liberation of Tripolitsa and saw that his men were faltering, he entered the church of the Theotokos in Chrysovitsi. He devoutly made the sign of the Cross, venerated the icon of the Theotokos and shouted in tears: “My dear Theotokos, help the Greeks once again to gain courage”. As he was exiting the church, he shouted to his men full of faith and holy enthusiasm: "God signed off on the liberation of Greece and He will not take His signature back".

The fearless fireship captain Konstantinos Kanaris, rejuvenated through prayer and Holy Communion at the church of Saint Nicholas, after setting the Turkish flagship on fire in the port of Chios returned in tears to the same church to express his gratitude to the Theotokos.

The Theotokos notably showed her favoring towards the uprisen Greeks. Her icon in Tinos was found on January 30, 1823, after a prompt by the Theotokos to the nun Pelayia at the historic monastery of the “Lady of Angels” at Kehrovouni. Many of the fighters traveled to the island to venerate the icon, firmly believing that this was a sign from the Theotokos and that freedom would not delay.

- “I will stand also myself a fighter of the faith in this land”.

In this beautiful land, our beloved homeland, we will also stand and fight with the same faith and ideals that its heroes had.
